Save the children

I directed this film for Save the Children some years ago. What drew me to the project was the concept—it didn’t focus on portraying children as victims, or rely on the typical imagery of suffering. Instead, it tried to speak about hope. The idea was that even children growing up in the harshest conditions still dream of a different future. Just like our own kids, they hope for something better.

I wanted to visualize that hope in a way that felt honest and dignified. It was a challenging but important project for me as a director, made possible thanks to my producer Jakob Eklund —who always makes the impossible happen—and to the brilliant cinematographer Joao de Botelho , who paints with this camera.

Looking back at the film now, it's heartbreaking to see how much darker and harder the world has become. So many children today face unbearable situations—ones they didn’t choose and have no power over. For many of them, hope isn’t even a possibility right now—they’re simply trying to survive.

That’s why Save the Children’s work is more relevant than ever.
